Tuljun Boolaroo Cooperative Eco-Village

Tuljun Boolaroo means Twin Peaks in the local Aboriginal language

The concept for our community sprung from the desire of two people wishing to purchase their own small acreage but not being able to find either an affordable or a satisfactory allotment.

This rapidly developed into desiring to belong to a socially-supportive, ecology-minded group that were not deeply into consumerism. When these desires were voiced to others suddenly we discovered there was a whole group of people looking for the same thing.

Fortune smiled on us and we have obtained the ideal property, 12 sq kilometers of virgin land. No pollution, no troublesome neighbours and generally insulated from the affairs of mainstream society. Our community is being built from the ground up and every shareholder has a say on where we are heading.

Situated halfway between Mackay (Nth Queensland) and Airlie Beach we are able to access the Whitsunday Island playgrounds and commercial centers with equal ease.

'Tuljun Boolaroo', high up on the Great Divide, nestles in between two prominent peaks and is watered by  rocky-bottomed water-ways. Well off the beaten track and bordered by rain forests and national parks it is not in any danger of being built out or for that matter being encroached on by expanding suburbia.

What a spectacular place. Its beauty is breathtaking. At every turn in the road there is a new surprise. The country undergoes multiple personality changes from area to area due to its large array of  micro-climates. These are created by numerous sharp ridges that are timbered with  hardwoods. From these ridges the sides plunge into secret valleys, glens and hidden dells, populated by cloud or rain forest growth  in some of them and Bloodwood, Gum or Box in others.

Each Shareholder has exclusive occupancy and use of their selected 2 hectare allotment plus recreational use of the common land (about 5000 hectacres).

In accordance with our ideals concerning Eco-sustainability Electricity generation is preferred to be either Solar or some other form of renewable non-polluting source; each household is responsible for their own system. Phone & Internet are available. In tandem with this are the principles and practices of Permaculture and Organics. As we operate our own internal trading system we are living that “old-time community lifestyle” without surrendering modern advantages.

Amenities such as Schools, Hotel, Bowls Club and Emergency services are located at Calen but this is at some distance away. Some members have expressed a preference for group home schooling and the co-op will make a place for this in the Yamba. A community house the 'Yamba ' is to be built by members as part of our social endeavors. This is to be used for markets, meditations, School, BBQ's and any community events. A Bread/Pizza oven is also envisaged.

We are open to new members, however there is a process which begins with attending our Monthly BBQ.
